If You Think There Is No Progress in Mechanical Response to Oil Spills…

Recent flemingCo Projects and Major Accomplishments:

  • External consultant to NOFO (Norwegian Clean Seas Association For Operating Companies) in connection with NOFO's New Response Technology project. NOFO aims to find or develop new technology that can operate faster and in rougher weather than today's technologies, 2008-?

  • Projects related to detection and recovery of submerged and sunken heavy oil, 2007-2008.

  • Bench tests of oil release agents on contaminated soil for clean-up contractors in Peru and Ecuador, 2005-2007.

  • Various R&D projects for Lamor Corporation, 2005-2006.

  • External consultant to the Canadian Coast Guard in connection with the M/V Santa Anna lightering operation, 2005. Download PDF - 258 kb.

  • Lead Engineer for the Sixth Joint US and Canadian Coast Guards and Industry Viscous Oil Pumping System Testing (JVOPS 6), 2002-2004. See more...

  • External Technical Consultant to China Offshore Environmental Service, COES, Tanggu, China, for the establishment of a Tier 2 Oil Spill Response Center in Tanggu with two satellite bases around the Bohai Sea, 2003 –  ?

  • Design of a new vertical Positive Displacement Archimedes’ Screw Pump range for Lamor Corporation in Finland. The GT-A series incorporates pumps with flemingCo type built-in inlet side steam injection and capacities from 20 to 140 m3/h (88 to 616 USGPM) and a maximum pressure of 12 bar (180 PSI), 2002-2003.

  • Design of the completely new Lamor LWS Weir Skimmer range for Lamor Corporation in Finland, 2002-2003.

  • Development and test of extreme viscosity product pumping tools and techniques, based on inlet- and discharge side steam injection flanges, which now are available from the respective pump manufacturers. Range up to above 3 million cSt.
    Developed for:
    - DESMI DOP-250 and 160 pumps in 2001
    - GT-185 pump in 2002 (40 x increase in capacity!!)
    - Lamor GT-A pump series in 2002
    -
    GT-260 pump in 2003

  • Tank tests of mechanical feeder skimmers on cold bitumen, under contract with Bitor America Corporation. Six brands could recover oil with a viscosity above 2 million cSt, and some even above 3 million cSt.
    The tested skimmers are:
    - KLK and UNISEP Skimmers in 1999
    - ERE, AXIOM, and KLK 1999 (tested in cooperation with the Canadian Coast Guard)
    - DESMI Belt Skimmer in 2001
    -
Lamor Brush Belt Skimmer in 2002

  • Extreme Viscosity Cold Bitumen Pump Tests at the SAIC Canada operated test facility in Ottawa, sponsored by Environment Canada and the Canadian Coast Guard.

  • Extreme Viscosity Cold Bitumen Pump Tests at DESMI in Denmark, Feb. 20 to March 1, 2001. Bitumen > 3 Mio cSt was pumped at a rate of 45 m3/h @ 2 bar through 20 m of 6" hose by the aid from the flemingCo designed steam injection flange on the pump inlet.

  • Determined, under contract with Bitor America Corporation, the Recommended Spill Response Equipment Packages for Orimulsion Marine Terminals, 2000.

  • Developed and successfully tested, under contract with Bitor America Corporation, new response equipment for rapid mechanical reflotation of spilled Orimulsion®. Equipment which also may have potential for the reflotation of sunken oil, 2000.

  • Tested and verified, under contract with Bitor America Corporation, the potential of sonar for the Underwater Remote Detection and Monitoring of spilled Orimulsion® and other non-floating oils, 1999.

Major Previous Work and Projects (while working with DESMI 1984 - 98)

  • Design of heavy oil spill transfer pumps commonly used in the oil spill industry, DESMI DOP-250 and DS-250

  • Design of widely distributed Archimedes' screw skimmers such as the DESMI-250 and the DESMI-TERMINATOR, as well as the small DESMI MINI-MAX and the DESMI Tarantula high capacity skimmer.

  • Participation in the remediation of about 100 extremely viscous waste oil pits in the Ecuadorian part of the Amazon Rain Forest

  • Participation in the Exxon Valdez (1989) and Aragon, Porto Santo (1990) spill responses.
